A wine of excellence: Condé Sangiovese di Predappio

Location

Predappio

The statutes of Predappio from the year 1383, state as follows:

"We declare that all those who possess vineyards within the boundaries of the Castle of Predappio or within a distance of twenty-five perches around the Castle, are strictly obliged to fence off the vines and keep them fenced so that animals do not damage them, the penalty for the offender is a fine of five coins. This statute is valid in the Castle of the aforementioned Predappio and not in other areas. "(CIII) x

This shows the immense importance of the vineyards, grapes and wine in the Predappio area, its protection and conservation dating back more than six centuries. Today Predappio, a small city in the provincia of Forlì-Cesena, stretching along the foothills on the left bank of the river Rabbi, is an agricultural centre (noted for its Sangiovese wines). Encyclopedia Motta 1953: "Its modern aspect is due to the fascist regime, as it is the birthplace of Benito Mussolini. Monuments worthy of note are the Romanesque church of San Cassiano (eleventh century AD); the ruins of Predappio Alta Castle built (in 1283 AD) by Giovanni d’Appia, sent by Pope Martin IV to combat the Ghibellines of Romagna. It was later conquered by the Ordelaffi, Lords of Forli (fifteenth century AD); Rocca delle Caminate castle, which is thought to be pre-eleventh century AD, and was restored in 1927 during the Fascist period, as the summer residence of Benito Mussolini."
The Condé wineries partially surround the castle with its vines.
